THE BUSINESS OF LIFE INSURANCE

How do you review a carrier commission statement against your sales?

Treat a commission statement as a set of entries to explain. The useful question is not just “What is the total?” It is “Which recorded policies and transactions explain this statement, and which entries still need review?”

Keep the original and identify the period

Keep the original file and note the carrier, statement date, covered period and account or producer reference. A statement period and a sale date are different fields; filtering sales only by the statement month can hide the record you need. Use your approved storage and access practices for files that contain client information.

Review the import before relying on matches

For a supported format, upload the statement and review the results. Check that the displayed period, transaction count and totals make sense against the original. If a field is missing or a layout has changed, keep the item unresolved and ask for help. Importing a file does not by itself establish that every row was interpreted correctly.

Match using more than a name

Start with carrier and policy reference, then compare the relevant producer, transaction date, transaction type and amount. Names alone can be ambiguous. Watch for formatting differences in policy references and more than one entry for the same policy. A later adjustment should not be silently treated as a duplicate of the original transaction.

Keep exceptions visible

A practical review list includes the statement entry, proposed matching sale, reason it needs attention, assigned reviewer and next action. Separate “no matching sale found” from “amount needs explanation” and “possible repeated import.” Resolving one kind of exception does not resolve the others. Preserve the original evidence and the reason for each correction.

Close the review with a clear result

Compare the reviewed entries with the original statement again. Record what is explained and what remains unresolved, rather than forcing the totals to agree through unsupported edits. For carrier-specific commission rules or adjustments, use the carrier documentation and your agreement as the authority. A tracking system organizes evidence; it does not certify that a carrier owes a particular payment.

Use LIT-AMS for the connected review

LIT-AMS lets you upload supported carrier statements, review matching results and follow payments and chargebacks alongside recorded sales. Start with a small supported file and watch the statement tutorial. Keep exceptions visible until they are explained. This workflow is about understanding statement activity, not guaranteeing payment or universal carrier compatibility.
